Shany Barath

Founder & Director, Disrupt.Design Lab (D.DLab)

• Advancing design-led approaches to tackle climate challenges.

• Merging material systems, cutting-edge technologies, and computational methods.

• Driving sustainability through optimized, data-driven design processes.

Prof. Shany Barath is an architect, educator, and founder of Disrupt.Design Lab (D.DLab) at the Technion’s Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning. Her pioneering research blends material systems, advanced manufacturing technologies, and computational methods to develop sustainable design solutions that respond to both environmental and cultural contexts.

A recipient of the prestigious Climate Solutions Prize for breakthrough research and the Design Educates Award for universal design, Shany’s work emphasizes design-led innovation to address critical ecological challenges in the built environment. By integrating bio-based, waste, and biologically enhanced materials into design-to-fabrication workflows, she reimagines architecture as a tool for sustainability and systemic change.

At FAB Conclave, Shany will present D.DLab’s cutting-edge research, showcasing three interrelated

trajectories:

1. Integrating living organisms into architectural workflows to connect biological performance with built form.

2. Utilizing bio-based and waste materials through additive manufacturing to expand architectural

possibilities.

3. Leveraging computational analysis to optimize designs for both human and ecological stakeholders.

Through these approaches, Shany advocates for a multidisciplinary, scalable rethinking of architectural practice, positioning design as a critical force in addressing climate change and advancing sustainability in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry.
